Domain Names Authority

Who is a Domain Names Authority? There are quite a few. Some are major domain name sellers (GoDaddy comes to mind). Some specialize in reselling premium domain names like Sedo, for instance. Others are big and small companies that either own - and deal with - domain names or develop domain names to generate revenue. And then, of course, there are MANY big and small domain name owners, collectors, and dealers. There is one more category of domain names authority that stands in its own right: professional domain name investors who make a living exclusively by acquiring and reselling domain names. One of the better known professional domain name investors is Elliot Silver who runs the acclaimed ElliotsBlog.com. Another is Jeremy Kesh (one of the founders and driving forces behind InternetRealEstateTycoon.com).

 

It isn't often that a domain names authority grants an interview but we've been lucky enough to get some tips and advice - not for domain name investors but business owners who either plan or have new Websites - from Jeremy Kesh.

 

On the topic of domain names for new business Websites, this Domain Names Authority said: "A domain name is NOT the same as a fictitious business name. After all, unless your business name happens to be a nationally recognized brand - such as Macy's or Target - the chance that Joe Smith (your new, prospective customer!) will search for your Website using yours or your business' name is ZERO."

In response to the question: how important is a domain name to the success of a Website? Domain Names Authority stated: "An effective domain name makes all the difference in search engine optimization of a Website. Search engine optimization (in short, SEO) is the code behind a Website that allows it to be indexed by search engine spiders and eventually rank well on Google and Yahoo. There are several elements that play a role in a successful SEO - domain name is not the only factor - with that said however the importance of a domain name shouldn't be underestimated because it is the first and most important keyword or a search phrase of your entire Website. It is worth the time, trouble and expense to acquire the domain name that will make your Website successful."

If you don't have a Website yet, or have one that can't be found Online Domain Names Authority advises: "Ask yourself how would you look for a business LIKE yours on Google or Yahoo: what search phrase would you use? If you own one of the unfortunate Websites that were named either after you or your business, realize that only a major brand can afford such a name. As a matter of fact, they belong into the same category as Chevron.com - that's just one example, of course - because it takes time and major expense to create a brand. In other words, you'd have to be or become famous, be featured and well-advertised on the radio, TV and Online before such a domain name could take hold in the mind of the public. In other words, a brandable domain name is successful only, if Internet searchers are looking for it by the brand name. If you happen to be a business or a professional, you're effectively REJECTING all new business and / or customers by choosing a brandable domain name."

Domain Names Authority continues: "If you're a small business owner look for a descriptive domain name. This type of domain names (also known as keyword domain names, SEO domain names, search phrase domain names and generic domain names) have a number of advantages. They rank well, attract targeted search engine traffic which for a business translates into customers, sales and revenue."
